Another senseless OWI crash has taken a life in Wisconsin. This time, the details are especially poignant: the victim was just nine years old.
WTMJ-TV reports that he and his brother were being driven to school in Lake Geneva by their mother, a teacher. The mother saw an oncoming SUV being driven erratically, so she pulled off to the side of the street. Unfortunately, the alleged OWI driver still crashed into her car, killing one of her sons in a violent car accident.
She and her other son were transported to an area hospital for treatment of their undisclosed injuries.
The accused drunk driver has three previous OWI convictions in Wisconsin. In a 2005 incident, he was so drunk he couldn't get his wallet out of his pocket. The police officer who arrested the 33-year-old also found marijuana in the car.
The man's third OWI came in October of 2007 in Rock County. He was ordered to have an ignition interlock device installed in his vehicle for 30 months. That sentence had lapsed by the time of the fatal crash.
The alleged drunk driver is currently in the hospital being treated for what are reportedly severe injuries stemming from the crash he caused. He was listed in critical condition in the hours immediately following the collision.
WTMJ reports that the driver attends the same church as the family of the boy killed. The man is said to have undergone alcohol abuse rehabilitation at a facility run by the church. The rehab program was apparently an alternative to jail for the man now accused of his fourth OWI and much, much more.
