Big rig crash leaves two dead in head-on collision

They thunder down I-90, racing through La Crosse on their way across Wisconsin. While big rigs deliver much of the goods we buy in stores, they can create havoc on our roads when drivers eager to beat deadlines are overly aggressive.

An example of an apparently overly aggressive truck driver can be found in a terrible truck accident far from here. A tractor trailer slammed head-on into a car, killing two people in North Carolina.

The crash happened right before Christmas.

A 53-year-old woman and her 49-year-old husband were both pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. Their six-year-old grandson, also in their vehicle, was hospitalized with unspecified injuries and later released.

The truck driver has been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter.

The 66-year-old trucker was apparently transporting frozen chicken in a 2009 Peterbilt rig when he began to attempt to pass several cars in a no-passing zone, according to law enforcement officials.

As he came over the crest of a hill, it was obvious why the zone was designated no-passing: the large truck was directly in the path of three oncoming vehicles.

The first vehicle, a 2006 Honda car, sustained only minor damage when its driver was able to steer safely off the road, avoiding a collision.

However, the tractor trailer then sideswiped a 1994 Mazda car, knocking it off the road. The big rig then veered left and slammed head-on into the Chevrolet Lumina car occupied by the couple and their grandchild.

In cases such as this, families of the victims might well consider seeking justice beyond the criminal charges brought against the trucker. In many cases, families receive compensation for funeral costs, medical bills, lost wages and benefits and other damages.
