1-year sentence in Fond du Lac crash that killed 3

It's nearly impossible to imagine a scenario as horrific as a fatal car accident that claims the life of three teenage girls. But that's the terrible reality of a crash last winter in Fond du Lac County in which authorities claimed a young woman speeding down a rural road caused a crash that killed three of her friends. While nothing can bring back a family member, anyone who loses a loved one in a fatal car accident should be aware of one's rights in a court of law.

Nov. 5 finally brought resolution in criminal court to the Fond du Lac case. The now-19-year-old woman who was driving the SUV that night was sentenced to one year in county jail for her role in the deadly crash in Campbellsport. The sentencing followed six hours of testimony, according to reports.

Fond du Lac County Circuit Court Judge Dale English passed down the sentence with exceptions to allow the woman's release for education, community service and work. She also will be on probation for six years and is barred from drug use or patronizing any bars.

The incident divided the county, with some residents supporting leniency for the young woman, while others pushed for a stiffer sentence than simply probation.

The woman pleaded no contest to three counts of homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Authorities said the SUV was traveling about 108 mph when the driver lost control. The road is currently posted at 35 mph, but the judge said he believed the limit might have been 50 mph when the accident occurred.

Survivors of anyone killed in similar circumstances should be aware that compensation for such a tragic loss is sometimes warranted in civil courts.
