Price of a dog bite

In May, Douglas County had two major incidents of dog attacks that resulted in serious injury. In one case, a six-year old boy was bitten by a pet pit bull/lab mix. The child received a severe wound to his cheek and had to undergo surgery. Vets euthanized the dog, and tests for rabies came back negative. Although the child is recovering, doctors worry there may be permanent damage to his face.

In the second incident, a couple were walking their puppy along the Tri County Corridor. A stray dog ran out of the woods and attacked the woman, biting her several times. The man kicked the dog and it ran off, but the animal then came back and bit the man on the arm. Both the man and woman needed medical treatment for their injuries. The identity of the dog remains unknown.

According to the CDC, dogs bite 4.7 million people every year, and 800,000 of those cases receive medical attention. In Wisconsin, pet owners are financially responsible if their dog bites someone. If authorities declare that a dog is dangerous, the owner must follow certain rules to keep the dog from attacking people. If a dangerous dog attacks another person, the dog may need to be put down.

If an animal bite is severe, it can lead to significant medical expenses. In addition to physical and emotion pain, an animal attack can cause scarring and disfigurement. The victim of a dog or animal attack may be entitled to seek compensation by filing a dog bite claim or animal bite claim. In many locations, the pet owner has liability for the actions of their pet and may be found guilty of negligence. Source: Superior Telegram, "Price of a dog bite," Maria Lockwood, June 11, 2013
