Highway 27 closed after fatal collision

The Wisconsin State Patrol closed a section of Highway 27 between Westby and Cashton for several hours on Oct. 16 after a fatal head-on collision. The car accident took place at about 8:35 a.m. and claimed the life of a 26-year-old Cashton man.

The man was driving a mid-sized SUV northbound when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with an oncoming truck. A witness to the accident said that the man may have been sending a text message or making a call on his cellphone at the time. The man was not wearing a seat belt was ejected from his vehicle; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The 48-year-old Sparta man who was driving the truck was wearing his seat belt, and he was transported to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua with injuries that were described as not life-threatening.

The force of the impact left the man's SUV almost unrecognizable, and the entire driver's compartment was destroyed. A responding police officer said that the man would almost certainly have died even if he was wearing his seat belt. The investigation into the accident was ongoing at the time of the last report. The crash was the fourth fatal collision in Vernon County this year alone.

Due to the SUV driver's distracted driving, the truck driver will likely incur medical bills and vehicle repairs. A personal injury attorney may be able to help him by pursuing financial compensation to cover these costs. Although the liable driver died in the accident, the attorney could pursue these sums from his estate.
