Honda recalls popular Acura SUV because of crash worries

Wisconsin Acura owners should be aware that Honda is recalling its 2014 Acura MDX luxury SUV. The well-received MDX is one of the finalists in the upcoming 2014 North American Truck of the Year competition in Detroit. The recall affects 19,197 vehicles and is expected to begin in mid-December.

The issue lies with the bolts attaching a propeller shaft to a universal joint. Honda has said that up to four of these bolts may not have been tightened properly. If the bolts loosen enough to fall out, the propeller shaft will detach. The damage to the vehicle could cause an auto accident. Honda reports that there have been no complaints, injuries or reports of accidents due to this issue.

Defects in vehicles can cause damage expenses, devastating injuries or even death. Safety-related recalls of vehicles are done under the authority of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Recalls can be voluntarily taken by the manufacturer or ordered by the NHTSA. Owners of vehicles involved in a product liability action need to provide basic elements of proof that the vehicle as sold contained a defect that created the risk of damage, injury or death while being used for its intended purpose. The plaintiff must establish that the defect caused an accident or other catastrophic event that resulted in the damage for which they seek compensation. The fact that a recall campaign has been done on a vehicle is often used as evidence for these purposes.

In the case of an accident due to a defect, a personal injury lawyer could assist plaintiffs in receiving a settlement for their suffering and to repair or replace a defective vehicle.
