Families awarded millions for fatal work accident

Losing a loved one to a work accident can be devastating and confusing, especially when the loved one is a teenager. A Wisconsin jury recently made the decision to compensate two families with a multi-million dollar award and provide restitution for another worker involved in a fatal work accident. Both families of the teen boys received $8 million and the surviving victim was awarded $875,000 for damages.

The two families involved in the lawsuit lost their teenaged children in a tragic grain operations work accident. Reports indicate that the 19 year old and 14 year old were performing their duties in the interior of a grain bin when the fatal incident occurred. The grain inside of the bin collapsed on the two boys and they were unable to escape.

In an attempt to help save the two teens, another worker dove into the grain bin but was not able to free the boys. The man who attempted to render aid was unable to escape the grain container as well. It took rescue workers six hours to remove him. The younger boys lost their lives when they suffocated in the grain in which they had become trapped.

The company responsible for the work accident had to permanently close its doors due to receiving hefty fines over $2 million. OSHA began a safety program addressing grain operations in Wisconsin and two other states in light of the tragedies. Loved ones who have lost a family member in a fatal work accident may choose to investigate all their options when pursuing rightful workers' compensation for expenses and damages.
