Safe travel tips during Christmas

A few weeks ago it appeared that we would have an long, epic winter since snow was falling in our region before Thanksgiving. Now, after a few weeks of mild weather, it appears that the week of Christmas will have challenging driving conditions, given that rain and snow are expected.

The combination of bad weather and heavy traffic could be a recipe for disaster. After all, the American Automobile Association expects millions of Americans to take to the road in anticipation of the holiday. As we have highlighted with parking lots in our previous posts, drivers have a duty to use reasonable care in anticipation of the conditions. A driver who fails to do so could be held liable if an accident occurs.

With that, we offer the following tips to our readers who will be on the road.

Stay off your phone – Distracted driving is still a problem among American drivers. When weather gets bad, it is imperative to limit distractions. As such, staying off your cell phone is recommended.

Be okay with traffic – It may be frustrating when traffic grinds to a halt or crawls at a snail’s pace, but compared to the alternative (ending up in a ditch) going along slowly is not so bad. With that, giving yourself time can be helpful so that you avoid taking chances that you wouldn’t normally take.

Have an emergency kit – No one ever plans to be stranded, but in the unfortunate event that you are, it pays to have an emergency kit in your car. A common kit has jumper cables, flares, a flashlight, a blanket and some food.

We wish our readers safe travels this week.
