Four things you should not do after an accident

With as many miles that people drive during the summer months, no one actually expects to be in an accident, despite the safety precautions that may be taken (i.e. wearing seatbelts, limiting distractions, or driving within the speed limit). Nevertheless, accidents do happen, and it pays to be prepared to preserve one’s right to recover money damages.

However, there are some instances where people may panic and do things that could hurt their chances of prevailing in an action to seek damages, even though they may believe that they are doing the right thing. This post will highlight a few of things that drivers in accidents should not do.

Admit guilt – When you’re in the moment, you may feel like it is appropriate to apologize for what happened. While it is okay to be sincere, you must be careful about admitting fault.

Flee the scene – Leaving the scene of a crash could subject you to criminal charges. So sticking around until the police arrive is better than running away because you may feel guilty.

Provide false information – Again, the fear of getting into more trouble should not drive you to provide false information about yourself. It will only lead to more trouble and hurt your chances of recovering in a civil suit. Remember, credibility can be key in car accident lawsuits.

Threaten the other driver – Also, it is natural to be upset after a crash; especially if your child was in the car with you. However, threatening the other driver cannot help you in this circumstance, even if you think that you are justified in lashing out.

The preceding is not legal advice.
