Three things you should never do after an accident

It is always amazing how quickly seasons turn in retail stores. On Saturday, Halloween decorations, costumes and candy dominated shelves. 48 hours later, it appears that the public is ready to embrace the holiday season even though Thanksgiving is still three weeks away.

Nevertheless, the holiday season is coming, which means that people across Wisconsin will be travelling to spend time with family. With that said, the chances of drivers being in an accident increase because of the larger number of drivers on the road, and the possibility of inclement weather.

For those with the misfortune of being in an accident, there are several things that should not be done. This post will highlight a few of them.

Admit guilt – In the moments after a crash, your humanity may lead you to apologize for what just happened. While this may feel cathartic, it may leave you being held liable for the crash. So while feel good about apologizing, it may be construed as admitting guilt; something that you should never do after an accident.

Flee the scene – You should keep in mind that leaving the scene of an accident could subject you to criminal charges. So when in doubt, sticking around until the police arrive is the best choice.

Provide false information – You may feel as if you will be in hot water because you may think you have a warrant out for your arrest. Because of this, you may be tempted to provide false information about yourself. It is critical to resist that temptation. You will only put yourself at risk for additional trouble and ruin your credibility in a lawsuit.

The preceding is not legal advice.
