Car accident may lead to wrongful death claim

Losing a loved one in a car accident is tragic. When the accident happens because of possible negligent actions that could have been avoided, surviving family members are understandably devastated. Survivors may experience both emotional and financial losses. When negligence is suspected to have caused the losses, a wrongful death claim may be pursued. This situation recently occurred in a car accident in Wisconsin.

On March 2, an 18-year old truck driver was traveling southbound on Highway 51, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office. An SUV, driven by a 60-year-old man, was turning northbound onto the highway when it was struck by the truck. The driver of the SUV was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The driver of the truck did not suffer any injuries from the accident.

Police report that the truck driver was arrested and faces charges of homicide by negligent use of a motor vehicle. Officers suspect that speed was a factor in the crash. In addition, police found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the truck. Police continue to investigate the accident.

After such a sudden and tragic loss, Wisconsin families are often faced with exorbitant medical expenses and/or funeral costs. They may have to deal with a myriad of legal issues during their time of grief. An attorney familiar with person injury law can help surviving family members understand their legal options and determine if filing a wrongful death claim is the best course of action. A successful claim can help offset the unforeseen financial burden.
