Frequently Ticketed Trucker Involved in Fatal Crash

The truck driver has been ticketed nine times in the past eight years. His most recent ticket was issued in September for inattentive driving.

He might find himself facing more serious accusations after the Dec. 5 truck accident in which his 18-wheeler rolled over onto a passenger car, killing its driver.

The Austin Post-Bulletin reports that the fatal crash happened about 200 miles due north of La Crosse.

The truck driver was headed west on U.S. Highway 2 in the early afternoon when his semi rolled over on to its right side when the driver was attempting a right-hand turn in Proctor, Minn.

A 58-year-old Duluth woman was killed in a compact car next to the truck.

No charges have yet been filed against the trucker. Investigators and accident reconstruction experts continue to try to piece together what caused the truck to roll.

A local law enforcement spokesperson said there's currently a backlog of accident reconstructions. Plus, several eyewitnesses have just recently come forward with statements about the fatal accident.

In the September incident, the truck driver was cited after police officers spotted his vehicle weaving over the center line. The driver admitted he had been using his cell phone at the time.

However, he pleaded not guilty in the case.

He was previously ticketed for speeding, failing to have his rig inspected as required, failure to obtain special permits when hauling overweight loads, failure to have proper warning lights, and for having unsafe equipment on his vehicle. All the charges were misdemeanors.

His truck was inspected following the fatal crash in order to determine whether there was a mechanical failure that resulted in the woman's death.

Officials didn't say when they expect to issue a report or file charges.
