Semi truck hits bus; Wisconsin woman killed

Last Saturday was a terrible day for bus accidents.

In the early morning hours, there was a horrific crash in New York City in which 15 people died and another seven were critically injured.

That evening, just after seven, in the Wisconsin town of Herman, just 15 miles west of West Bend, one person was killed and four others injured when a tour bus and a tractor trailer crashed.

The bus flipped twice, according to media reports. The semi truck driver reportedly failed to yield at the intersection of Highway 33 and County Road P, a rural crossroads.

An elderly woman who was a passenger on the bus was killed in the crash. Both the truck driver and a passenger in the vehicle were airlifted to a hospital for medical treatment.

There were only three people on the bus at the time of the crash: the 75-year-old woman from Milwaukee who died, another 75-year-old woman from Milwaukee (she was hospitalized) and the 52-year-old Milwaukee driver of the Rite Way bus.

The sheriff said the accident was a tragedy that could have been even worse had the violent collision involved a fully loaded bus.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was a 30-year-old woman from Norcross, Ga. She was accompanied by a 30-year-old woman from Atlanta.

In the New York crash, investigators were looking into the activities of the bus driver in the 72 hours before the crash, trying to determine if he had had enough sleep. Witnesses say they suspect the driver might have fallen asleep before the vehicle crashed into a light pole, ripping the roof off and killing 15 passengers.
