Multi-vehicle crash, multiple injuries on I-90

We're all familiar with the high speeds at which cars and trucks travel along Interstate 90. While the highway is important to La Crosse for a variety of reasons, it can also be a very dangerous place, especially when drivers recklessly ignore speed limits.

A multiple-vehicle crash last week made this evident again. The Wisconsin State Patrol said five people were hurt when a speeding Chevrolet HHR slammed into three vehicles, causing one to flip over in the median.

Luckily, the five people hurt didn't sustain life-threatening injuries, though of course, non-life-threatening injuries can be painful and often require extensive treatment and rehabilitation.

The HHR (a retro-styled station wagon) was driven by a 35-year-old man from Kentucky, law enforcement officials said. The man was illegally passing and speeding when the accident occurred outside of Sparta in the eastbound lanes of I-90.

The HHR initially struck a Chevy Trailblazer, which veered into the median and flipped over. The 28-year-old female driver of the Trailblazer is from Tomah.

She had a 26-year-old female as well as two little girls, ages three and four, in her vehicle at the time of the wreck. All were injured and hospitalized, but as we noted, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The driver of the HHR was hospitalized in La Crosse.

Drivers of two other vehicles in the collision were unhurt.

Officials with the State Patrol told that an investigation of the accident was proceeding and at that time, no charges had been filed.

Let's hope everyone recovers quickly from their physical injuries and that the psychological scars, especially for the young girls, aren't long-lasting.
