La Crosse man killed in head-on collision

The story in the La Crosse Tribune was short and to the point: a 57-year-old motorcyclist was killed when a car crossed the center lane on County Highway B and hit him head-on.

According to the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department, the 33-year-old driver of the Audi car crossed that center line because he was looking down at his phone right before the car accident.

Unsurprisingly, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the violent crash. The driver of the car was treated and released from a nearby clinic.

Though the crash is under investigation, the driver of the car is free to continue his life. The man on the motorcycle? His life is over. Over, say police officials, because a man found his cell phone more interesting than the road he was driving on.

This story is just another terrible and tragic example of the dangers of distracted driving.

We hear the phrase "distracted driving" a lot, but some aren't exactly clear what it means. A distraction can be one of three types: visual (it takes your eyes off of the road), manual (it takes your hands off of the steering wheel) or cognitive (it takes your mind off of driving).

In the case of texting on a cell phone while driving, it's a visual, manual and cognitive distraction all at the same time. And the results can be deadly, as the case of the La Crosse motorcyclist shows.

Other forms of distracted driving include eating or drinking while driving, talking, reading, using a GPS navigation system, changing radio stations, watching a video and more.

We wish the family of the motorcyclist the best as they strive to overcome this needless, senseless loss of life.
