Heartwarming story of boy bouncing back from traumatic brain injury

The news is something no parent wants to hear: your son has been hit by a car while riding his bicycle and has suffered a traumatic brain injury.

But in a recent case, that terrible news has slowly, miraculously been turned around, as the 11-year-old boy who was hit this past spring has made a remarkable recovery from the brain injury, fractured skull and lung damage he suffered.

In April, the boy was riding near his home far from La Crosse, when a car crashed into him. The New York boy was paralyzed and breathing with the aid of a ventilator; he was in an induced coma for six weeks.

His 46-year-old mother said that after the accident, she didn't truly believe her boy would survive.

She said she slept by his side, night after night, in the hospital.

The boy's doctor said the child "was in a very, very, very grave state when he was found at the scene" of the accident. Unable to speak or move normally, the boy suffered spasms and unpredictable spikes in blood pressure.

Doctors gave the family guarded updates: don't get your hopes up. If he lives, he won't be the boy you knew.

And so on.

Grim news, to say the least.

But as he slowly recovered, doctors were able to take him off of the medications that been keeping him alive. As the medications were withdrawn, the child began a regimen of intensive physical therapy.

The combination proved to be what many would call a miracle.

"We try not to use those terms," the doctor said, "but it is amazing."

Indeed.

The boy is now at home, running and talking and laughing again.

Of course, those extremely knowledgeable and helpful doctors all come at a steep price. Months of treatment and rehabilitation must be paid for by someone. In many cases similar to this one, someone hit and seriously injured by a negligent driver can receive compensation for not only their medical bills, but also for their pain and suffering.
