'Normal' never returns for some brain injury survivors

We recently came across an article about survivors of traumatic brain injuries that was both depressing and inspiring at the same time.

It was depressing in the sense that so many brain injuries are preventable injuries that occur in car accidents caused by negligent drivers. And the article was inspiring in the sense that it told the story of caregivers who work so hard to help injury victims recover as much as they can of their lives.

It doesn't really matter whether a brain injury victim is in La Crosse or another city or state. Regardless of geography, victims often have to deal with the sudden loss of both mental and physical capabilities.

For one woman interviewed for the article , the word "normal" hasn't meant much to her since her son was injured in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago.

According to her, "normal is just a setting on my washing machine."

Her life has been anything but normal since she had to learn on her own how to take care of an adult son unable to do many of the things the rest of us take for granted.

Another mother in a similar situation said, "you never have a normal life again" once you become a caregiver to a brain-damaged adult child.

The Centers for Disease Control say that falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries. Car accidents are the second leading cause at 17 percent, while people who are struck by objects are the third biggest group of traumatic brain injury victims.

Those who have a loved one who has suffered an injury due to someone else's negligence should discuss the matter with an attorney experienced in getting compensation to pay medical expenses, physical rehabilitation and recover lost income and benefits.

Full and fair compensation is the very least traumatic brain injury victims deserve after being robbed of so much of their lives.
