2 juvenile bicyclists injured in Sparta auto accident

It goes without saying that collisions between motor vehicles and bicycles can have serious consequences. Usually, an investigation is necessary in determining whether driver negligence played a part in auto accidents involving bicycles.

Recently in Sparta, an auto-bicycle accident sent two juveniles to the hospital. According to the La Crosse Tribune, the young people were taken to Mayo Health Clinic Systems after being struck by a pickup truck as they tried to cross the road.

One of the juveniles was released from the hospital, but the other had to be transported to a La Crosse hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. The 58-year-old woman driving the truck was reportedly not injured, and police had not issued any citations at the time of the news report.

Water Street, where the accident took place, was closed for roughly two hours. In that time, investigators likely tried to assess what happened. In other such accidents, sometimes an additional investigation is necessary to determine whether civil claims should be filed with regard to damages.

Personal injury attorneys understand the many factors may be in play when a motor vehicle collides with a bicycle. Important questions arise as to who had the right of way and who may have caused the crash. Sometimes bicyclists ignore traffic laws, and sometimes drivers of larger vehicles do. In other cases, a driver may even misreport to authorities key facts that require extra effort to bring to light.

Bicycle accident victims in Wisconsin should be aware of their rights. Likewise, drivers of larger vehicles should know what their options are after being involved in a crash. The process of determining liability is not always as simple as it would seem, even in the event of serious injuries.
