Police: Driver inattention caused six deaths in truck accident

Everyone knows that summer is not only driving season, but also road construction season. No one should be more familiar with the summer proliferation of road construction zones than the drivers of 18-wheelers who spend their days traveling through La Crosse, crisscrossing Wisconsin and traversing the nation.

Law enforcement officials say at least one truck driver missed the highway signs warning of road construction work ahead and traffic delays. They say his inattention is the reason his truck slammed into the backs of vehicles stopped for construction, killing six people.

The fiery upstate New York crash took the lives of four members of one family, plus a family friend, all of whom were in an SUV rammed from behind by the big rig.

Killed in the SUV was a 42-year-old school speech therapist, her two daughters, ages 14 and 11, her mother-in-law, 69, and a friend of one of her daughters, who was 14 years old.

A motorist in another vehicle was also killed, officials said, when the fully loaded truck hit the line of stopped cars.

A fully loaded tractor-trailer can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. Passenger cars and SUVs typically weigh between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds.

So far, officials haven't determined if the truck driver should face criminal charges. They say he wasn't impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash and that phone records show he wasn't making a call or sending or receiving a text message in the moments before the collisions.
