Did fish oil help brain injury victim recuperate?

If La Crosse residents feel like they've been hearing about brain injuries in the news a lot lately, they might be right. Over the past few years, the medical community has come to realize that brain injuries can devastate their victims in ways that are not immediately apparent to the eye and can continue to impair someone years after the injury that lead to the brain trauma.

One of the things that alarms people is that so far, the medical community has not found a one-size-fits all approach to successfully treating brain injuries. Some treatments work for some people and for some injuries, but so far, it seems like nothing works for everyone.

We recently heard about an unusual way to treat brain injuries that seems to show some promise. In March 2010, a 17-year-old boy was involved in a terrible car accident and suffered a brain injury that was so severe his doctors expected that if he even lived, he'd be a comatose or "a vegetable" for the rest of his life.

However, the doctors began a treatment that involved high doses of fish oil, a substance that has high levels of the same sort of "building blocks" used to build and repair the human brain. Two weeks after starting the regimen, the boy emerged from his coma.

Today, the now 20-year-old man is still recovering, but he is doing much better than doctors ever thought he would.

We wrote about this story because we wanted to five brain-injury victims and their families some hope. We understand that brain injuries can be life-changing and hard to deal with, but treatments like this do show at least a little promise and could potentially be the start of a new approach that really helps brain injury patients.
