Unemployment rate higher for those with disabilities

As the national election season enters its closing moments, the focus in Wisconsin and elsewhere is still on the economy and unemployment. The employment for those without disabilities continues to climb. According to the Department of Labor, 171,000 jobs were added in October and the current unemployment rate is at 7.9 percent.

For those with disabilities, the employment story is a little different. It was recently reported that the unemployment rate for those with disabilities went up from 12.9 percent to 13.7 percent. It is important to keep in mind that some people with disabilities are able to work, while others are unable to work and would qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

The Social Security Administration reports that the number of new applications for SSDI benefits has stabilized. This may help the application claim backlog that currently exists.

An independent group conducts a quarterly disabilities survey and had the following numbers to report for the third quarter of 2012.

  • People with disabilities experienced unemployment at a rate 73 percent higher compared to those without disabilities.
  • The number of people who applied for SSDI in the third quarter was 726,026 compared to 737,468 in the third quarter of last year.
  • There have been 2.2 million SSDI applications so far in 2012.
  • The average wait time for an SSDI application is about 800 days.

It would seem that with the current backlog of individuals waiting for claim decisions and appeals, that it would be a wise idea to obtain legal assistance so that the process goes as smoothly as possible.
