Wisconsin teen charged in injury causing crash with squad

Teenagers are somewhat notorious for doing unwise things. Unfortunately, driving while intoxicated is one of them. Although they are not yet of legal drinking age, teens can face some of the same consequences adults face when they are caught driving under the influence. This includes losing their Wisconsin driver's license, jail time (or juvenile detention), and being assessed fines. The consequences can be even worse if the teen causes a car accident.

An 18-year-old male was remanded into custody Nov. 2 on charges of drunk driving and causing injury while intoxicated. According to authorities, the young driver and a 17-year-old friend were returning home from a concert that was held in Madison on Nov. 1. While on Interstate 94, the teen crashed full speed into a parked vehicle carrying two Waukesha County sheriff deputies.

The squad car caught on fire, but the officers escaped. They then pulled the driver and his passenger out their vehicle. The 18-year-old was subsequently arrested. The officers sustained minor injuries and complained of back pain. The teen passenger remains in critical condition. The charges pending against the young man include operating a vehicle while intoxicated and two counts of causing injury.

In addition to the criminal charges, the teen could face a civil suit. The officers or the driver's passenger could be in positions to seek compensation for medical expenses and other damages resulting from the accident.
