New charges for Wisconsin man involved in motorcycle crash

When oncoming traffic mistakenly crosses over the middle line, there can be precious little time for other drivers to react, and an accident may be unavoidable. New motions are being filed in a Fond du Lac County Circuit Court to amend the charges brought against a 26-year-old Wisconsin man, who was initially charged after a fatal car accident last year.

The accident happened on a stretch of U.S. 151 on May 31, 2012. The defendant's car allegedly crossed the center line and plowed into a group of 12 motorcyclists from Muskegon, Michigan. The defendant contends that he cannot remember what happened just before or just after the accident. Nonetheless, in September 2012, he was found competent to stand trial, and on Jan. 7 the State of Wisconsin filed a motion to amend the charges against the defendant, which now total 13 counts.

The defense filed motions to dismiss the state's charges and to suppress evidence found in the defendant's possession. Nurses at the hospital claim to have found a syringe in the defendant's clothing. The defendant, however, denies having any syringe. The defense also filed a motion to suppress statements made by the defendant after the crash. The man is reported to have said that he was on two prescription medications at the time of the accident, although he does not recall taking them.

The crash took the lives of two men and injured eight others, one of whom lost a leg. Prosecution can only go so far in addressing the losses incurred by those involved in this accident. Similarly, money can never fully compensate for the loss of a loved one. Justice, however, can be found by holding the responsible parties liable for pain and suffering, medical costs and funeral expenses. Furthermore, families may be able to receive compensation for the loss of financial support if a loved one dies due to the negligence of another.
