Serious bicycle accident sends Altoona rider to hospital

In Wisconsin, drivers who intend to turn left must yield the right of way to oncoming vehicles unless a traffic directive indicates otherwise. That law applies to bicycles, too.

Recently, a serious bicycle accident occurred in Lake Hallie when an SUV driver turned left and collided with an Altoona bicyclist approaching from the opposite direction. Both the rider and the driver had green lights at the time.

The accident occurred at around 4:15 a.m., and the bike rider had to be transported from the scene for emergency medical treatment. The bicyclist, whose injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, was still in the hospital at the time of a local report.

The collision snapped the bicycle in half and caused damage to the windshield and hood of the motor vehicle.

Unfortunately, it was noted that the bike rider was wearing black clothing at the time of the accident, likely increasing the chance of a collision. Still, drivers of larger vehicles are notorious for failing to notice bicyclists and motorcyclists on the road.

The driver of the SUV involved in the crash said that he didn't see the rider approaching, and a driver travelling on the same side of the road as the bicyclist indicated the same thing.

After such a violent and injurious collision, the 20-year-old bike rider is undoubtedly considering his options. When negligence can be proven on the part of a motorist involved in such a crash, injured parties can receive compensation for medical bills and other damages. Wisconsin residents confronted with a similar situation should be aware of their legal options.
