Gilman Cheese Corp. fined by OSHA for work accident violations

Both the state of Wisconsin and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) typically make regulating workplace safety a top priority. Part of this goal includes inspecting workplaces where a work accident could occur and issuing monetary fines in the event that companies violate safety standards. Recently, a Wisconsin cheese factor was levied with substantial fines for multiple safety violations.

The fines came about after an inspection took place in the wake of a worker having two fingers amputated in a work accident. Reports indicate that this was not the first such accident: another worker suffered a similar injury in early 2012. Due to the fact that OSHA believes these safety violations were both repeated and willful in nature, the Gilman Cheese Corp. has been placed in a category called the Severe Violator Enforcement Program.

Being classified in this program means that OSHA inspectors could visit the company's facilities at any point to ensure compliance with state and federal safety regulations. Some of the safety guidelines that they would likely be looking at revolve around machine guarding that could prevent any further amputations from occurring while workers are slicing cheese in the factory. Additionally, the company was cited for other violations like improper eyewash stations and a failure to ensure appropriate safety training for workers.

Steps like these can often prevent a Wisconsin work accident from occurring, when followed properly. Those who have already suffered a workplace injury may be able to file for workers' compensation benefits. These funds are often available after an on-the-job injury to help employees pay for medical and other related expenses while unable to work.
