Summer means fewer but far more dangerous crashes

During the summer months, Wisconsin sees fewer car crashes than in the winter. The accidents that do occur during the summer, however, are more serious and result in fatalities more often, according to statistics. During the winter, drivers get used to traveling at slower speeds, says the director of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Safety. In the summer, faster speeds lead to more serious crashes. In 2012, only 23 percent of serious injuries and fatalities occurred during the months of December, January and February. The months of June, July and August make up close to 30 percent of these numbers.

Car crashes happen for a number of reasons. In 2012, the number of accidents caused by alcohol spiked in La Crosse County. Despite this one-year increase, crashes related to drunk driving have declined overall since 2005 due to changes in education and law enforcement. Accidents from distracted driving, which can be caused by cell phones, have been on the rise in recent years. La Crosse's 2012 accident statistics also saw an increase in the number of auto-bicycle crashes.

Although the number of car crashes did not drop in 2012, there has been a decrease in auto accident deaths compared to the past decade. The higher safety standards of in newer cars may play a part in this decrease. Other factors at work include better drivers' education and emergency medical services. Seat belts play an important part in keeping drivers and passengers safe.

Auto accidents can cause brain injury, death and high medical expenses. Insurance companies may not always be able to give drivers full compensation for their pain and suffering. A personal injury lawyer may be able to help drivers who have been involved in an auto accident or head-on collision due to negligent driving to obtain much-needed compensation.
