Auto-Deer Collision in Wisconsin Sends Three to the Hospital

While driving on a dark road in the late evening in rural Wisconsin, a driver swerved to avoid hitting a deer on the road but subsequently collided with a truck traveling on the same road in the oncoming lane. All three victims of the car accident were seriously injured, trapped inside their vehicles and had to be extracted before being taken to the hospital. Auto accidents involving deer are not uncommon in the LaCrosse, Wisconsin area.

Car collisions involving deer are on the rise. According to Insurance Journal, approximately 1.23 million auto accidents involving deer occurred between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. Urban sprawl and construction of new roads in rural areas are behind the increase. Although optional comprehensive coverage in auto insurance policies covers damage to vehicles caused by auto collisions with deer and other animals, some policies may exclude expenses such as damage to windshields. In addition, if another vehicle was involved, as in the crash on U.S. Route 2, additional expenses involving medical treatment and more may be involved.

The complex nature of auto-deer collisions necessitates the need for a competent personal injury lawyer. Although no one died in the above-mentioned accident, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) indicates that approximately 200 deaths result each year from such crashes. When additional vehicles are involved, it is important to determine if negligence was also involved on the part of the driver trying to avoid the deer.

A personal injury lawyer may be able to help in other ways when auto collisions with deer or other animals occur. A competent attorney could help plaintiffs to seek payment for medical expenses, time lost from work, pain and suffering, vehicle repair not covered by insurance, court costs and other associated fees.
