Man charged in fatal accident

A Wisconsin man was taken into custody on drunk driving charges on July 20 after an early morning car crash that killed two and left one other person hospitalized in fair condition. The fatal accident happened on Gumz Road in Linwood at approximately 2 a.m. The 22-year-old driver allegedly lost control as his car went over a hill; it then rolled and landed against a group of trees.

Two 21-year-old women were pronounced dead at the scene. A 21-year-old man was airlifted to Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Police say that the driver had attended a fire department fundraiser earlier in the evening and consumed three pitchers of beer. He reportedly had a .148 percent BAC level after the crash. Prosecutors say that they are awaiting the results of a blood test that was administered after the driver was taken into custody. He was held on $25,000 bail.

Additional charges are pending based on the outcome of the police investigation. The Sheriff's Office plans to meet with the Highway Patrol to learn about potentially retrieving information from the wrecked car. The information could tell investigators how fast the car was moving or whether the driver applied the brakes before the crash.

Additional information about the details of the crash could also help the families of the deceased women should they choose to pursue wrongful death suits. They could pursue compensation for damages linked to the accident, such as final expenses, lost wages, and sums for pain and suffering. An attorney with experience in handling wrongful death suits could examine the accident, determine whether a suit is warranted and help calculate the appropriate amount of damages to seek.
