Wisconsin lawmaker fights for tougher laws for accident victims

When a person sets out for a short walk or bike ride in Wisconsin, they are not likely to think the event could lead to serious injury or to the end of their lives, but the reality is often different. A pedestrian hit by a motor vehicle may sustain injuries that are life-threatening or permanently alter the quality of life. For those who suffer the most serious fate and are killed because of an auto-pedestrian accident, family members are left to cope with the grief, loss and financial struggle that may be a result of a bad decision made by a driver.

Although his attorney claims the sentence was fair because he had no previous run-ins with the law, critics claim a Wisconsin man's sentence is too light for an accident that killed a bicyclist several years earlier.

The 24 year old driver was sentenced to 90 days in jail for the accident that occurred after he'd been drinking at a football game. Lawmakers and a spokesman for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin both feel the sentence was too light and that respect for life demands a more serious sentence for similar accidents.

The driver's previous clean record is not likely to do much for a family who is grieving the loss of a loved one. Family members may regularly deal with pain and suffering, medical bills and financial hardship because of the choices of one driver that was out to have a good time. Any person affected by an auto-pedestrian accident may benefit from meeting with an attorney to discuss where the responsibility for the accident should be placed.
