Texting driver hits 5-year-old Milwaukee boy; paralyzes him

Many people in Wisconsin are aware of the dangers of drunk driving, but they may not know that texting while driving can be just as, if not more dangerous, than drunk driving. In fact, a driver is 23-times more likely to be involved in a collision if he or she is texting. The number of accidents where a cell phone contributed continues to rise. In 2011, at least 23 percent of all automobile accidents in the U.S. had a cell phone involved in some way.

Although it is illegal to text while driving in Wisconsin, there are those that still choose to do it. One of Wisconsin’s radio stations hopes to change that by challenging its listeners to take a pledge to not text and drive. The station shared the story of a Milwaukee family who was featured in a YouTube documentary about the dangers of texting while driving.

In 2010, the family’s 5-year-old boy was outside his home when he was hit by a woman who was texting and driving. He survived the pedestrian accident, but suffered injuries that left him paralyzed from his diaphragm down. His mother spends a large majority of her day taking care of the boy’s needs like changing his trach and repositioning him.

The boy’s mother feels it is her mission to raise awareness about the dangers of texting while driving in order to help other families avoid the same heartache her family has had to endure. She may benefit from speaking with a personal injury attorney about filing a lawsuit against the driver who hit her little boy. She may be entitled to compensation for his pain and suffering and medical bills.
