Wisconsin women, age 85 and 92, killed in auto accident

Two elderly women, aged 85 and 92, were killed, police say, when the 92-year-old who was driving failed to yield the right of way at an intersection near the city of Stevens Point. According to authorities, the women were driving northbound and failed to yield to a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 10, causing the car accident. The westbound vehicle was driven by a 26-year-old woman, who was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Wisconsin State Patrol said that the right westbound lane of Highway 10 was closed for several hours. According to authorities, the 85-year-old woman was killed in the crash, and the 92-year-old woman was airlifted to a regional hospital, but later died there of her injuries. Speed was believed to be the causal factor in the crash. A Sheriff's Department sergeant said the combination of high speeds and the need for fast decisions when crossing a roadway with a 65 mph speed limit caused some car accidents.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reported that there were six fatal crashes involving drivers 75 or older in 2011 that were considered speed-related accidents. Of those drivers, one was female and five were male. When injury crashes and property damage crashes were included in the speeding-crash count, drivers in that age group were reportedly involved in 236 crashes, 82 of them with women behind the wheel and 154 with men operating the vehicle.

A car accident can happen to drivers of any age. Individuals who have been injured or who have lost loved ones due to an auto accident may find the services of a Wisconsin attorney to be helpful. A lawyer can work toward securing financial compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses and other such damages.
