Drive carefully to avoid car accidents on winter roads

With colder temperatures incoming, La Crosse motorists need to prepare themselves for winter conditions; winter driving is more complicated than in the summer. They can start with making sure that their vehicles are in good operating condition, since being stranded on the highway because of a breakdown when it's snowing and freezing outside can be dangerous.

Drivers are advised by a meteorologist to be familiar with their vehicles' braking systems, as those with anti-lock brakes stop differently than those with regular brakes. She also recommends that drivers leave more room between their vehicles and the ones that they're following; hitting the brakes on an icy highway might cause either a rear-end accident or force the vehicle off the road and into a ditch. While some may feel that they are experts at driving under adverse road conditions, other drivers may not be.

Another way to avoid winter car accidents is to drive under the speed limit. Posted speeds are for optimum driving conditions, not for roads that are covered with snow and ice. Drivers going too fast on slick roads could find themselves in a ditch on the side of the road.

Winter driving conditions with slick roads and decreased visibility can increase the risk of being in car accidents. Those who are injured in car accidents caused by another driver's lack of judgment regarding these conditions may be eligible for compensation from that driver's insurance company. This may include present and future medical expenses for injuries suffered and lost wages when a victim's injuries leave him or her unable to work.
