Little girl's progress with cerebral palsy highlighted in report

More than two out of every 1,000 babies are reportedly diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which can limit a person's movement and motor coordination to various degrees, depending on the individual case. Often people living with cerebral palsy are unable to work, and Supplemental Security Income is necessary to help families cover the cost of their loved one's basic needs and medical care.

St. Paul's Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare is a treatment destination for cerebral palsy patients from all over the country. One little girl from Oakdale, Minnesota, underwent surgery and therapy there, and because of her remarkable progress, Wisconsin residents may actually see her in an advertising campaign for the hospital.

Her story was highlighted in a news article in which she is shown baking brownies and talking about her struggles and triumphs.

The 11-year-old's condition affects the left side of her body, and in addition to surgery, she has already undergone years of therapy. She said kids at school even teased her about her condition, but thanks to her parents and others, her outlook has remained optimistic. Her parents said her condition improves on a daily basis, but it's likely that she'll need physical therapy for the rest of her life.

To help pay for medical treatment and daily expenses, adults and children living with cerebral palsy may be eligible to receive Supplemental Security Income, which is available to people even if they have never been employed. There are certain requirements, however, and many people's applications are denied.

Families in Wisconsin and Minnesota may do well to speak with a disability attorney if the Social Security Administration has denied an application for benefits.
