2 injured after drunk driver plows into Amish buggy

The state of Wisconsin has the fourth largest Amish population in the country, just behind Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are a large number of Amish settlements spread across Wisconsin. Because of this, is it important for motorists to remember that the Amish have a right to drive their horse-drawn carriages on the roads too.

Of course this can lead to problems for drivers who are not paying attention to the road. Because a horse-drawn buggy goes much slower than a typical automobile, it can be easy to misjudge the time it takes to overtake one. The typical Amish buggy travels anywhere from 5 to 8 mph on average. Although they usually travel on the shoulder of the road and feature an orange reflective triangle on their rear sides, they are still involved in a number of accidents each year. When accidents occur, it is typically those riding in the buggy who get the brunt of the impact.

A car accident that involved a motorist and an Amish buggy occurred in Grant, Wisconsin recently. The motorist is suspected of being intoxicated when he crashed into the buggy on County Highway G. Two passengers inside the buggy were injured and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Authorities arrested the motorist on suspicion of drunk driving.

Those injured in this accident may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney about their right to compensation for their pain and suffering and medical expenses. Doing so can ensure that their interests are protected.
