Honda recalls minivans over braking malfunction

Wisconsin Honda owners should know that potential brake problems in the automaker's 2007-08 model year of Odyssey minivans prompted the company to issue a recall of almost 350,000 vehicles. The recall was announced due to concerns that the Vehicle Safety Assist System might malfunction and suddenly engage the minivan's brakes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Board, this could lead to a car accident where another vehicle rear-ends the stopped Odyssey.

Honda reassured consumers that no accidents or injuries had been reported due to the problem. However, the company did tell the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it had received 205 field reports and 109 warranty claims regarding the issue by the end of June. Federal regulators began an investigation of the Odyssey in June after 22 reports were received alleging that the vehicles would spontaneously brake. Some of the complaints said that the Honda dealer in their area found a problem with the sensor that monitors the steering angle, but others reported that the dealer could locate no particular cause for the unexpected braking.

In all, 344,187 Odysseys that were manufactured between August 2006 and September 2008 will be being recalled by Honda in March 2014. The car maker pledged to install new sensors to correct the VSA problem, which also raises the risk of a crash due to the fact that the brake lights do not work when the malfunction initiates a hard stop.

Faulty equipment can lead to a car accident involving serious injury or death. An accident investigation might be able to determine liability in a crash whether it is due to a malfunction of one of the vehicle's systems or due to the actions of a reckless or distracted driver. At that time, those who were injured might have the option of filing personal injury claims.
