Fire caused when intoxicated driver slams into townhomes

Not everyone who is involved in a car accident in in Lacrosse, Wisconsin is inside a vehicle. Many times those who are walking along or across the roadway may become victims of a negligent driver. Even those who are inside buildings aren’t completely safe from reckless drivers.

This was the case in a car accident that occurred in Hainesville, Wisconsin on October 25. A 32-year-old man from Kenosha, Wisconsin was driving his SUV southbound on Hainesville Road around 4 a.m. Authorities say the man was driving intoxicated and veered over the roadway’s center line, jumped a curb, ran over a road sign and slammed into a townhome. The impact set a gas meter on fire. The blaze spread through three of the six townhomes in the unit. Two of them were complete losses, the third was seriously damaged. The families living in the homes were all able to escape without injury, but were left homeless.

When authorities arrived on the scene, they could not locate the driver of the SUV right away. He was found hiding under a pickup truck near the scene of the accident two hours later, and although he tried to run from authorities, he was eventually taken into custody. He is being charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident and aggravated DUI. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month for a pretrial hearing.

The owners of the townhouses would be well advised to speak to an attorney who can work to ensure that they are properly compensated for the damages done to their homes.
