Another energy drink company accused of wrongful death

In what seems to be an increasing trend, another energy drink company is being named in a wrongful death suit. The family of a 33-year-old man believes that drinking Red Bull was a primary factor in the man's death.

The lawsuit was filed in 2013, and an attorney for the man's family claims that the construction worker went into cardiac arrest after playing three games of basketball and then drinking a Red Bull. He reportedly collapsed on the court and was pronounced dead after being transported to a medical center. The attorney handling the family's case says that the fact that the man was in very good health and had no preexisting conditions is a leading issue, distinguishing it from similar cases against these types of companies.

According to reports, Red Bull is currently reviewing the case and the evidence presented. Red Bull has not commented on this specific case, and the company has not filed any motions. The lawsuit was filed by the man's grandmother, and reports indicate she is seeking $85 million in damages.

According to reports received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Red Bull could possibly be linked to 21 adverse events, ranging in date from Jan. 1, 2004, to Oct. 24, 2012. Although none of the events listed included death, other effects such as chest pain, anxiety and vomiting were listed.

The strenuousness of the man's basketball games and his medical records are likely to be large issues in this case, and understanding how a company may choose to deal with such allegations is a first step for those trying to seek damages for wrongful death or loss of companionship.
