Poor road conditions in the winter months already increase the chances of injury-causing accidents, and excessive speed can make things even worse. When drivers do not respect the winter weather and drive accordingly, multiple lives can be affected.
Officers are reporting that a semi accident that occurred on Feb. 5 in Wisconsin may have been caused in part by excessive speed. According to authorities, the 22-year-old driver of a Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling above the speed limit, when the car went around a curve and drifted into the oncoming lane.
The Cruiser crashed head-on into a semi driven by a 45-year-old man. The semi driver apparently tried to swerve out of the way of the oncoming vehicle but was not able to get clear of the PT Cruiser. The semi truck reportedly caught fire, and the PT Cruiser came to a stop in a ditch. A third car became involved when it crashed into the semi's rear axle.
The 24-year-old driver of the third car, the Cruiser's driver and a passenger where all taken to the hospital and later released with minor injuries. According to reports, poor road conditions may also have been a factor in the crash, and the highway was closed for five hours while officers investigated.
When a crash involves a tractor trailer, the severity of the accident often increases due to the sheer size and weight of the semi. While the investigation into this accident is ongoing, it appears that the driver of the semi tried to react appropriately. For those injured in crashes due to inattentive or unqualified truck drivers, discussing the case with someone knowledgeable in the area of personal injury can ensure a thorough understanding of options for compensation.
