Wisconsin semi accident part of multi-vehicle pile-up

Wisconsin, along with the rest of the country, has certainly seen its fair share of inclement weather this winter, and the snow and ice has been no friend to travelers on the road. A pile-up involving approximately 10 vehicles, including a semi, was the result of three separate but related crashes on Highway 151 around 11 a.m. on Feb. 13.

The accidents occurred close to the Highway V exit in Dane County and ended up closing the southbound lanes of Highway 151, stalling traffic for hours. According to authorities, the chain of events started when a car was rear-ended. That vehicle slid on the road, resulting in three cars going into a ditch. A semi, which was behind the rear-ended car, was not able to stop in time. The semi ended up partially jackknifed and in the ditch as well, causing a third crash behind the tractor-trailer.

According to officials, the crashes were due in part to drivers not heeding the less-than-desirable road conditions and not leaving enough space and time between them and the cars in front of them. Reports initially said that 17 vehicles were involved in the pile-up, but that number has been downgraded to nine or 10. Several of the cars required tow removal, and two people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Wisconsin road conditions can change rapidly in the winter, making it important for drivers to slow down in anticipations of icy and snowy roads, especially on the highway were tractor-trailers are more common. Semis require a much greater distance and more time to come to a stop than regular passenger vehicles. If it is found that the truck accident was due in part to an inattentive truck driver not maintaining that safe distance, it may be possible for those injured to seek compensation for expenses incurred as a result of the crash.
