Wisconsin woman charged with DUI after two-car wreck

Traveling by car has become so routine in the lives of today's Americans that safety on the road is often assumed. Other drivers are not always responsible, though, and a person driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can dramatically increase the risk of a car accident, as several people found out earlier this month.

A 36-year-old Wisconsin woman was charged with several offenses, including child endangerment, driving under the influence of drugs, improper lane use and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, after an accident involving two vehicles on Jan. 26. According to Sheriff officials, the accident occurred at 4:43 p.m., when the woman's 2013 Volkswagen Jetta, which was headed south, crossed into the northbound lane and hit a 2003 Honda Accord.

The Accord's driver was apparently uninjured, but his three passengers, as well as the woman driving the Jetta and her two children, were all transported to hospitals. It was not clear what kind of injuries they suffered or what the severity of those injuries was. The woman is currently waiting for a court date to be set, and the Divisions of Child and Family Services for both Wisconsin and Illinois have also been called in.

When someone is injured in a car accident, it can cause a serious disruption to that person's personal and professional life. When the accident is caused by someone who was driving under the influence, the emotional suffering can be even greater. Those who do not follow the laws and safety regulations while operating their vehicles should be held accountable for their actions and, if the court allows, the medical expenses and pain and suffering of those injured.
