Multiple accidents in Marathon County due to speed, snow

At least 10 crashes on Feb. 14 in Marathon County were due to adverse road conditions and drivers not maintaining proper speeds. According to the Marathon County Sheriff's Department, the slide-ins and crashes -- including a semi accident -- came after an additional two inches of snow fell in the area on Feb. 13. The wintry weather made the roads more slippery than usual, but it appears that motorists did not slow down to compensate.

One crash involved two vehicles and a school bus. According to reports, one of the drivers may have been under the influence of alcohol, but the bus was not transporting children at the time of the accident. It was unclear if any injuries were incurred in the impact.

A second crash involved a vehicle that flipped over near Edgar on Highway 29. It was unclear if any other vehicles were involved or what the cause of the crash was, but the driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital.

A third crash, handled by the Rothschild Police Department did result in injuries after a pickup truck and tractor-trailer collided outside of Wausau on Interstate 39. According to police, the driver of the pickup lost control of the vehicle and ended up hitting a bridge railing before sideswiping the semi. Three adults sustained injuries, but it was unclear which vehicles the victims were in.

While icy or snowy roads can make driving more treacherous than normal, it is still the responsibility of the drivers on the road to ensure they are driving at appropriate speeds and maintaining safe stopping distances. In cases where negligence is proven on the part of a driver, others injured in an accident may benefit from discussing the situation with a personal injury attorney to see what options are available.
