Over 130 car crashes reported in Eau Claire in one week

The harsher than usual winter this season in Wisconsin has made traveling by car an often treacherous experience. With what seems like snowstorm after snowstorm, the number of car accidents continues to rise. According to reports, the Eau Claire Police Department responded to over 130 crashes from Feb. 20 to Feb. 27 alone. Residents have reported particularly dangerous spots, including one on Claremont and Craig road where a woman said she almost slid through a red light when trying to stop.

The high number of traffic accidents may also be a compounding problem. Backed up traffic because of an accident can sometimes lead to more crashes, and the police department has now started using the social media site Twitter to alert residents to crashes which have caused road closures so they can plan alternate routes.

Authorities have also urged those who are involved in minor accidents to be patient and expect a longer than normal wait time. Due to the volume of incidents, officers are responding based on the severity of the crash and where it occurs. An officer at the Eau Claire Police Department told reporters that while the department keeps at least eight officers on duty at all times, an accident that calls for a road closure can take two or three officers, limiting department resources.

Snow- and ice-covered roads demand more attention from drivers. A distracted driver can cause an accident in a matter of seconds, and the severity of the accident and injuries incurred may be even worse when coupled with slippery roads. Poor road conditions mean that it takes longer for vehicles to come to a stop, and it is crucial that drivers maintain a greater following distance and keep their attention focused on driving. When a car accident does occur, the subsequent investigation is an important part of determining the cause of the accident and who was at fault so that it can be determined if a victim is eligible for compensation.
