Wisconsin man dies after crash with police cruiser

Wisconsin State Patrol investigators are still trying to figure out the events that led to a fatal crash involving a police squad car. According to reports, the accident happened around 4:20 p.m. on March 26, when an 81-year-old man driving a vehicle collided with a squad car. The two vehicles apparently stopped against an AT&T truck, although authorities have not yet confirmed whether two or three vehicles were involved.

Accord to reports, the squad car was on its way to investigate an unrelated car accident when the crash occurred. One witness said that she was in her house nearby when she heard the crash and saw neighbors running to the scene. The officer and an unidentified person who was in the third vehicle were both transported to the hospital. The officer was released with minor injuries, and no information was available on the condition of the other person. The 81-year-old driver of the second car passed away at the hospital.

Police reported that, right now, they are trying to reconstruct the accident to see what exactly happened and who was at fault. Officers are currently trying to determine whether the 34-year-old officer had activated the flashing lights on the squad car and the speed at which he was traveling. One witness reported not hearing any sirens. Part of the street was closed while the investigation continued.

If the investigation shows that the officer did not follow the proper procedures for responding to an accident, including alerting nearby vehicles to its presence through the sirens and lights, any surviving family of the 81-year-old may be able to pursue compensation for loss of companionship in a wrongful death suit.
