Undercover stings aim to reduce pedestrian accidents in Wisconsin

With spring officially in full bloom in Wisconsin, more and more people are out and about enjoying the warmer temperatures. This means that there are also more pedestrians crossing the roadways. Drivers need to be alert and aware of pedestrians who are crossing in the street and understand that drivers are required to stop when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk.

Law officials in Wisconsin are cracking down on motorists who have little to no regard for pedestrian safety. At a particularly dangerous crosswalk in Bethesda, authorities are taking action. Last April, a driver ran over a pedestrian sign in the crosswalk. This occurred while an effort was being made by authorities to be more aggressive about pedestrian safety. In June, 22 drivers were pulled over for failure to stop while a pedestrian was in the crosswalk.

Just recently, an undercover police crosswalk sting took place for two hours at the Wisconsin Avenue crosswalk. A police officer who was undercover and posing as a pedestrian would attempt to cross the street. During that time, 24 citations were issued to motorists who failed to stop for the officer in the crosswalk.

Other undercover crosswalk stings are being planned in Wisconsin in an effort to increase pedestrian safety and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities that can result from pedestrian accidents.

If you or a family member has been injured while crossing the street in a crosswalk, you may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney to discuss your right to compensation for your injuries and medical expenses.
