Wisconsin semi accident injures 2

A Wisconsin semi accident involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck has resulted in serious injuries for two people. According to reports, the truck accident occurred on April 14 at the intersection of Walworth Avenue and U.S. Highway 12 in Whitewater.

Officers arrived on the scene around 12:32 p.m., and an initial investigation found that the 43-year-old male driver of the 2012 Freightliner semi with a Great Dane trailer, reportedly failed to yield to traffic while he was attempting to turn left. Both directions of traffic reportedly had the green light. The semi apparently crashed into a 1998 Ford Econoline E-350 pickup truck, and both the driver and passenger of the pickup were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

According to reports, the 52-year-old driver of the pickup incurred serious chest injuries as a result of the crash, and his 33-year-old passenger also sustained chest injuries in addition to severe injuries to his lower leg. The driver of the semi was reportedly uninjured. The Wisconsin State Patrol, Walworth County Sheriff's Crash Investigation Unit and Truck Inspector, and the Whitewater Police Department and Fire and Rescue were all on scene. The road was closed for approximately three hours, and the semi driver was cited for failure to yield when making a left turn.

While all drivers have an obligation to operate their vehicles responsibly to decrease the chances of an accident, semi drivers must be especially careful to leave extra room to accommodate their longer stopping times and the length of the truck when making turns. As shown in this case, failure to do so can result in serious injuries to others and possible litigation for the negligent driver.
