Truck driver charged with vehicular homicide after fatal accident

Because truck drivers in Wisconsin spend a great deal of time on the road, it can be easy for them to become complacent about their driving and not pay as much attention as they should. In an effort to get a load delivered on time, truckers may push their limits and try to drive for an extended period of time, often times going without sleep. Because this can be so dangerous, federal laws have been put into place that dictate that drivers cannot drive more than 11 hours on any one shift.

A Walmart truck driver who may have been sleep deprived caused an accident that left one person dead and four others injured recently. Walmart said that as far as they knew, the driver had met the federal rest guidelines while he was operating the truck. It is not known how authorities concluded that the driver had not slept for over 24 hours.

The truck accident occurred when the trucker slammed into the back of a limo bus. The trucker apparently did not notice that traffic ahead of him was slowing; when he finally did notice, he tried to swerve, but he hit the bus anyway. Comedian Tracy Morgan was on the bus at the time and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The truck driver was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and assault by auto. He posted bond and was released that night.

Those who were injured in this accident and the family of the man killed may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney to determine their right to compensation.
