Teen goes left of center, injures 4

A two-car accident in Wisconsin has left five people injured. The incident, which happened around 9:30 p.m. on June 29, involved a 2003 GMC Sonoma and a 2008 Dodge Avenger. According to reports from the Rock County Sheriff's Office, the 17-year-old driver of the Sonoma was headed east on Highway 14 when the vehicle allegedly went left of center and crashed into the Avenger. The Sonoma apparently flipped over and landed in the road, while the Avenger went into a ditch.

According to deputies, it was found that the 17-year-old was still inside the Sonoma after deputies had to use a fire extinguisher on the vehicle because it was smoking. The 17-year-old was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. There were four occupants in the Avenger: the 16-year-old driver, her mother and her two younger sisters, ages 11 and 12. All four were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. The mother and two younger children suffered minor injuries, and the 16-year-old suffered internal injuries but was listed in critical but stable condition.

The 17-year-old was cited for operating left of center, but the crash investigation was still ongoing by the Wisconsin State Patrol. The exact reason for the car accident had yet to be determined at the time of the reports. The crash shut down Highway 14 for three hours from North Fox Road to North Eagle Road.

Younger drivers are more likely to engage in reckless or distracted driving, and the accidents caused by such actions can be disastrous. If a driver is found to have caused an accident because of excess speed or texting while driving, victims may be able to file a civil suit seeking compensation for expenses and pain and suffering.
