New in-car display may not ward off distracted driving

Labor Day is the annual occasion where automakers try to clear out supplies of model year inventory to make room for the next year’s models. This is most likely why consumers are seeing sales of 2014 models, so that 2015’s can be brought in. Not only do new body styles create a new buzz of interest, so do new features.

One of these features has to do with hands free systems that allow drivers to control multimedia systems as well as their cell phones.

With that, one of the new offerings for 2015 models may be Navdy, a dashboard based glass display and projects information seen on a smartphone onto it, so that a driver sees the display right in front of them. Even more interesting, a driver can simply swipe their finger in front of his or her face to answer a call or view a text message. The glass display gives the illusion that the images are floating in mid air so that a driver does not have to take his or her eyes off the road.

With what appears to be a novel idea to curb distracted driving may not actually do so. A 2013 study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety revealed that even though a driver’s eyes may stay on the road, mental distractions may overload their capacity to process information and react to hazards.

Because of this, drivers must still use reasonable care when behind the wheel. This means that using cell phones should be used sparingly, regardless of the fancy displays that can be incorporated.
