Why uninsured motorist coverage is important

Let’s face it, insurance coverage commercials are the most entertaining on television. From Aaron Rodgers’ encounter with Hans and Franz, to the Geico pig and Gecko, car insurers appear as if they are more concerned with entertaining viewers to make a name for themselves rather than advertising the beneficial aspects of their policies.

This is likely because insurers understand that a large majority of consumers will only purchase the minimum amount of coverage allowable, which in the state of Wisconsin is $10,000 for property damage, $25,000 for the injury or death of one person, and $50,000 for the injury or death of more than one person in a vehicle.

While these numbers may seem reasonable, consider that medical expenses can easily top more than $25,000 when a person stays a few days in the hospital after an accident. If surgery is required, that number could double.

Because of this, some insurers may sell underinsured and uninsured coverage to help people guard against drivers who may not have any insurance or not enough coverage to be financially responsible for the costs that may come about as a result of an accident. This type of coverage is especially helpful in obtaining compensation when there is no way to identify the culprit in a crash (i.e. hit and run accidents).

So while this type of coverage may be a bit more expensive, it may be worth your while to protect yourself against the unexpected…or mayhem, as what Allstate would have you to believe.
