GM to start compensating those injured in ignition switch crashes

As the fall driving season begins in earnest, more drivers are likely to be on the roads to take in tours of the fall colors, and to get back and forth from football games across the state. In a prior post we highlighted the potential dangers that drivers may face as the seasons change. In light of the natural hazards that may befall drivers, many believe that there are still many mechanical dangers that are still unaddressed.

These fears come in the hundreds of thousands of unrepaired GM vehicles that could be affected by the ignition switch issue that has led to nearly two dozen deaths and scores of crashes. As we have noted in prior posts, the ignition switch on affected vehicles could cause the car to go from “run” to “stop” based on the weight of a key chain in the ignition. The issue led to the recall of more than 2.5 million vehicles across the United States and Canada.

GM paid a $35 million fine, which was a record for an NHTSA investigation. It is also subject to a number of products liability lawsuits based on its inability to correct the problem. However, a New York Times report indicates that GM is ready to start settling these claims. The company is reportedly set to review more than 120 death and 500 injury claims, to which it will seek additional information and determine if a payout is merited.

It remains to be seen how many claims are actually processed and paid; but if you receive a request to provide information, it is helpful to include an experienced attorney.
